It's true, there are a lot of instances out there where artists or famous folks muck it up and have to apologise. They don't always do a good job, huh? What's worse is, we sometimes put out art that we know will annoy some people. But if the message is experienced to be important enough to warrant that, it's abalancing act. There's also a difference between annoying... and harming. It's on the offended party to assess if something was actually that bad, but marginalised people are often gaslit into no longer trusting their instincts either way. Good people don't set out to hurt people on purpose. But if it happens, a genuine apology is in order and it's important to show reflection and growth. A creator who harms on purpose is not a good person. But most people are somewhere in the middle. If you are so scared of offending though that you do not dare put anything out there... how do you grow? People need direct feedback to improve. It is not fair though to place the labor of education on the marginalised person at all times. So where does one go from there? The person reflects in silence. I agree. We probably should have known better. Being sheltered, wanting to provoke a reaction, looking for a fight, wanting attention... those are reasons. Not excuses. We see so often how people make these over the top, sobbing apology videos and posts but don't actually change. That's good for drama youtube channels, but doesn't help to heal the wounds the original actions caused. Some creators think they shouldn't have to apologise, and sometimes it does feel like it barely matters if they do or don't... If they do apologise after all, it becomes a symbolic act. I do not really like that, as an artist. It lacks integrity. It lacks heart. The people who have been hurt may or may not even want an apology. They might want to just never have to think about the situation again. It is important to me to at least say that I am sorry. And that I will try to do better. For whatever that is worth. I see. I am glad for this feedback... It can be difficult to find a good balance of heavy and light, humor and seriousness. When handled just right, sometimes you can use humor to create a bridge and teach others something important. You can also make difficult topics go ad absurdum and cash in some laughs, but then it runs the risk of becoming straight up offensive. A different course of action that emphasises contrast over ridicule was chosen here for that reason. In such a mixed media work as this project, there's more space for multiple layers and voices, but if the contrast between one and the other doesn't work, the piece doesn't work.
